Elon Musk's big allegation on Starlink's entry in India, said – some powerful people are stopping it; The government replied

The launch of Elon Musk's company Starlink, which is preparing to launch satellite internet service in India, is once again in the news. The company has almost completed its technical and ground preparations in India, but final regulatory approvals are still awaited. Regarding this delay, Musk alleged that some powerful industrialists are stopping Starlink from entering India, so that they can maintain their dominance on the telecom market. However, the Indian government has rejected these allegations, saying that the same regulatory process applies to all licensed satellite communications companies.

Musk made allegations in social media post

Elon Musk raised the issue of delay in Starlink's entry in India in response to a post on social media platform X. Without naming any company or businessman, he claimed that some 'oligarchs' were blocking Starlink to maintain their monopoly.

Musk called it against the interests of the Indian people and hinted that it was anyone's guess who could be the powerful businessmen concerned. However, he did not make public any independent evidence to support his allegations.

Starlink has got the license, then why is the launch stuck?

Starlink has received key licenses required for satellite communications services in India. Despite this, the company is awaiting the completion of some final approvals, security assessment and spectrum allocation process to start commercial services.

Apart from Starlink in India, Jio Satellite Communications and OneWeb India also have licenses for satellite communication services. According to the central government, these companies will have to meet regulatory and security related requirements.

20 gateway sites ready in India

Starlink has advanced its launch preparations in India significantly. Senior company official Lauren Dreyer told at the India Mobile Congress 2026 that about 20 gateway sites have been prepared for India and hundreds of antennas have been installed in them.

The company says that it has designed its operational structure keeping in mind Indian security and regulatory requirements. Arrangements have also been made to keep data related to Indian customers within the country.

The government called Musk's allegations baseless

After Musk's allegations, the central government clarified that no company is being discriminated against for satellite communication services in India. According to the government, the three licensed satellite operators, including Starlink, are broadly in the same regulatory phase and are going through the security assessment process.

The government said claims that the regulatory framework or its application are discriminatory are baseless.

Service considered important for rural and remote areas

The biggest potential advantage of satellite internet is believed to be in areas where fiber or traditional mobile networks are difficult to reach. Starlink has been talking about connecting rural and low connectivity areas of India with its service for a long time.

The government has also told Parliament that satellite-based communication services can help in increasing connectivity in rural, remote, border, coastal and hilly areas.

Now the focus is on final approvals

Starlink has claimed that the infrastructure in India has been prepared, while the government has said that the security and regulatory process has been completed. In such a situation, the commercial launch of Starlink in India now depends on the process of final approvals and spectrum allocation.
