Empowering Millions: PM Jan Dhan Yojana Completes 12 Years as Rs 53 Lakh Crore Transferred via DBT:

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), hailed as the world’s largest financial inclusion initiative, has officially completed 12 remarkable years of transforming India’s economic landscape. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28, 2014, the scheme has successfully bridged the gap between marginalized communities and formal banking channels, ensuring transparent and efficient delivery of public welfare benefits across the country.

Rs 53 Lakh Crore Transferred Seamlessly Through DBT

Over the past 12 years, an astounding Rs 53 lakh crore has been directly transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the accounts of millions of beneficiaries. According to data shared by the government platform ‘MyGov India’, this mechanism has effectively eliminated intermediaries, curbing leakage and ensuring that welfare funds reach intended recipients without delay. The vast majority of these cumulative transfers have flowed directly into Jan Dhan accounts, reinforcing transparency in government expenditure.

Empowering Women and Deepening Rural Reach

The initiative has also served as a powerful catalyst for women’s financial independence. Out of the total 59 crore Jan Dhan accounts currently operational across the nation, an impressive 33 crore accounts—representing roughly 56 percent—belong to women. Furthermore, financial inclusion has penetrated deep into the grassroots, with 46 crore accounts (78 percent of the total) concentrated in rural and semi-urban regions. Today, nearly 100 percent of Indian villages have a banking outlet within a five-kilometer radius, supported by a network of over 1.35 million “Bank Mitras” delivering services beyond traditional brick-and-mortar branches.

Core Benefits: Zero Balance and RuPay Insurance

PMJDY accounts continue to offer unique structural advantages designed to encourage a savings habit among underserved populations. These accounts require no minimum balance and carry zero maintenance charges, removing traditional barriers to banking. Every account holder receives a complimentary RuPay debit card, which bundles an accident insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh alongside eligibility for an emergency overdraft facility of up to Rs 10,000. With over 41 crore RuPay cards issued to date, the scheme has successfully integrated millions into India’s expanding digital and cashless payments ecosystem.
