ENG vs NZ: Joe Root aims for 2 mega-records, just 75 runs and will become the first batsman in the world to do so
England’s star batsman Joe Root is once again on the verge of registering his name in the record books. In the first Test match against New Zealand being played at Lord’s from June 4, Root will have a golden opportunity to achieve two big milestones. 35-year-old Root needs only 75 runs to complete 2,000 runs in Test cricket against New Zealand. If he touches this figure, he will become the first batsman in Test history to score 2,000 runs against New Zealand. Currently, Root has scored 1,925 runs in 21 Test matches against the Blackcaps. During this period, he has maintained an average of 53.47 which includes 6 centuries and 9 half-centuries.
Root already holds the record for scoring the most runs in Test cricket against New Zealand. He has left behind Pakistan’s legendary batsman, Javed Miandad. Miandad has 1,919 runs in his name against New Zealand, while Root has already scored 1,925 runs. Apart from this, Root is just 57 runs away from completing 14,000 runs in Test cricket. If he accomplishes this feat, he will become only the second batsman in the world after India’s legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar to reach this milestone.
Will Root be able to break Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time run record?
The record for most runs in Test cricket is in the name of Sachin Tendulkar, who has scored a total of 15,921 runs. Root is currently 1,979 runs behind this record. Many experts in the cricket world believe that considering his current form and fitness, Root can challenge Sachin’s historical record in the future.
Recently, Root himself admitted that it is becoming increasingly difficult for him to ignore the ongoing discussions regarding Sachin’s records. He said that Sachin Tendulkar’s achievements are truly incredible, and being compared to him is an honor in itself. Root also praised Sachin’s very long cricket career and his 100 centuries in international cricket.
Joe Root’s dominance in WTC
Root’s dominance continues in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC). Since the beginning of the WTC, he is the highest run scorer among all the batsmen. Root has scored a total of 6,480 runs in 74 Test matches. This figure is almost 2,000 runs more than Australia’s Steve Smith who is currently in second place. Therefore, the Test match to be held at Lord’s will not only be a match between England and New Zealand but it will also be a great opportunity for Joe Root to create many historical records.
