‘Everyone has to go’ – Kapil Dev addresses Rohit Sharma’s retirement rumours
Ahead of the final India vs England ODI on Sunday, cricket fans were given a massive shock when it came to light that Rohit Sharma could be playing his last game. TheIndian Express reported that the former Indian skipper doesn’t feature in India’s plans. The report also stated that the player’s dream of playing the 2027 ODI World Cup could be shattered.
On Friday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia rubbished any talks of retirement. Saikia also said that the player will continue in the format till he figures in the selector’s plans. Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev said that the player’s retirement should be celebrated rather than cause sadness.
Speaking to ANI, the 67-year-old said, “We have to stay happy. Why be sad? Rohit has given us so much happiness over the years. Everyone has to go. The likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, andAnil Kumble have all retired. So when he leaves, we should celebrate him and think about the memories that he gave to fans not just in India but also around the world.”
The former skipper also added that if the player is leaving, then he should make it memorable with a century. It is uncertain what will happen over the next 36 hours. Fans will hope that the ‘Hitman’ doesn’t retire and gets his wish of playing the next World Cup.
Batting coach supports under-fire batter
On the batting front, he has scored 37 runs from two games at an average of 18.5. England was his favorite hunting ground, but this tour has proved otherwise so far. Mumbai Indians star has repeatedly reiterated his wish to play in the global event to be held in the African continent next year.
Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, speaking at the end of the second ODI, put his weight behind the batter. Former Saurashtra legend said, “He didn’t get many runs, but that doesn’t make a difference. On a particular day, many batters don’t get the momentum they are looking for, and that can happen. You may see Rohit play a completely different role at Lord’s.”
