Ex-Meta employee recalls “doomsday” before layoffs
California: A former employee of Meta has described the atmosphere inside the company before its major layoffs as “almost like doomsday”, revealing the fear, uncertainty and emotional stress employees allegedly experienced during repeated rounds of job cuts.
The account surfaced ahead of another expected wave of layoffs at Meta, where reports suggest around 8,000 jobs could be eliminated on May 20 as part of the company’s continuing restructuring efforts under CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Former employee describes tense atmosphere
Adel Wu, a former Meta employee, shared her experiences on social media platform X, recalling how panic spread across offices before the company’s first large-scale layoffs.
According to Wu, many employees spent the night before the cuts anxiously preparing for uncertainty, unsure whether they would still have jobs the next day.
“I remember the very first big layoff, the night before was almost like doomsday,” she wrote.
She claimed employees were hurriedly packing office supplies, snacks, drinks and chargers amid fears of sudden termination.
Employees reportedly struggled with uncertainty
Wu described the workplace environment as emotionally exhausting, especially during repeated restructuring phases.
She suggested layoffs had become a recurring pattern at Meta rather than isolated incidents.
According to her, there were “probably four to five layoffs” during her final year at the company, creating long-term anxiety among employees.
The uncertainty reportedly affected morale significantly, with many workers constantly worried about future job security.
Anxiety continues ahead of fresh layoffs
The former employee said many current Meta workers remain deeply anxious as another round of cuts approaches.
Some employees, she claimed, are waiting to be laid off, while others fear losing jobs they consider financially critical.
The comments have once again highlighted the emotional impact of mass layoffs across the technology sector, particularly in companies that rapidly expanded during the pandemic-era digital boom.
Meta continues restructuring efforts
Meta has undergone several rounds of layoffs and cost-cutting initiatives in recent years as the company attempts to streamline operations and focus heavily on artificial intelligence and long-term technology investments.
The company previously described many of these measures as part of its push for greater efficiency.
Like several global technology firms, Meta has faced pressure from investors to reduce spending while adapting to slower growth and changing market conditions.
Tech industry faces broader workforce shifts
Mass layoffs have become increasingly common across the global technology industry over the past few years.
Several major firms have reduced workforce strength amid economic uncertainty, rising operational costs and shifting priorities toward AI and automation.
The experiences shared by former employees like Wu continue to draw attention to the human side of corporate restructuring, particularly the emotional strain faced by workers during periods of instability.
As Meta prepares for another round of cuts, conversations around workplace culture, employee wellbeing and long-term job security in the tech sector are once again under the spotlight.
