External Affairs Ministry gave update: 14 Indian ships emerged safe amid tension in Hormuz
New Delhi, 23 April. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed on Thursday that in the last few weeks, 14 Indian ships have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz while 14 other ships are still present in the Persian Gulf. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during the weekly press briefing here that the situation is being continuously monitored and the safety of Indian ships is the top priority.
Tension increased in strategic area
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important sea routes, through which a large part of the global oil trade passes. Due to the ongoing tension in West Asia, the situation in this region has become more sensitive.
Iran claims attack on ship
According to media reports, Iran recently attacked a ship in the region, which was heading towards India’s Mundra Port. This attack took place at a time when Donald Trump had announced a ceasefire just hours earlier.
IRGC-N actions and identification of ships
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGC-N) claimed actions against two ships. These are said to include “MSC Francesca” and “Epaminondas”. According to ship tracking data, Epaminondas was on its way to Mundra from Jebel Ali Port in Dubai.
India expressed strong objection
After the incident, India lodged a strong protest with Iran. The Foreign Ministry summoned Iran’s Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali and described the attack on Indian ships as a serious issue.
Emphasis on safety of sailors and ships
The Ministry of External Affairs clarified that India is very serious about the safety of its ships and sailors. Also, an appeal has been made to Iran to ensure safe movement of Indian ships and bring the situation back to normal soon.
