Do you also have an SBI card? The rule is changing, the charge will be made from now on

SBI Card New Rules: SBI Card has given a big shock to its credit card users. From 1 December 2026, extra charges will have to be paid on transportation and fuel transactions. Under the changed rules, SBI Card will charge a fee of 1% on every eligible transportation transaction above Rs 30,000. These transactions are identified under Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) 4111, 4784 and 4131.

  • Example: If a cardholder makes a transportation payment of Rs 35,000, he will have to pay an extra charge of Rs 350. While a transaction of Rs 50,000 will incur a fee of Rs 500.

  • This fee will be applicable on every single transaction that exceeds the limit of Rs 30,000.

1% fee on total fuel expenditure above Rs 50,000

SBI card users will now also have to keep track of their total fuel expenditure during each billing cycle. If the total fuel transaction amount in a billing cycle exceeds Rs 50,000, a fee of 1% will be levied on the entire fuel cost of that billing cycle.

  • Example: If the total fuel cost during a billing cycle is Rs 55,000, then the 1% fee will be calculated on the entire Rs 55,000 and not just the excess amount, resulting in an extra charge of Rs 550.

What should SBI card users be aware of?

From 1 December 2026, cardholders will have to transact by understanding the difference between the two limits. The transportation fee is applicable on every single transaction above Rs 30,000, while the fuel fee will be based on the total spend above Rs 50,000 in a billing cycle. Users who make frequent large payments should keep a constant eye on their statements and spending to avoid unexpected charges.
