New Delhi/Saharanpur:Fake Indian currency worth Rs 17.29 crore recovered from the currency chest of Punjab National Bank has shaken the entire banking system. Taking major action in the case, the National Investigation Agency has arrested absconding bank employee Amit Kumar. Amit Kumar has been named in the FIR in this case and is said to be a key accused in the alleged conspiracy.
The secret of fake notes was revealed on August 29
On August 29, Sadar Bazar police station of Saharanpur had received credible information about the presence of huge amount of fake notes in the currency chest of PNB. As the investigation progressed, the needle of suspicion turned towards the employees of the bank itself. The inquiry and investigation revealed the role of three bank employees, after which the bank management suspended all three.
The case reached NIA from police
Initially, FIR number 0431/2026 was registered on August 29 at Sadar Bazar police station. After this, considering the seriousness of the matter, on September 3, 2026, NIA took over the investigation and registered it under RC-02/2026/NIA/LKW.

After the arrest of Amit Kumar, the investigating agencies are keeping an eye on how the fake currency worth Rs 17.29 crore reached the currency chest and who were the people behind it. NIA is busy connecting the links of the entire conspiracy. The search for other accused involved in the case is ongoing. The investigating agency says that the investigation is being carried forward continuously to expose the entire conspiracy and nab the absconding co-accused.
