Feature like SIM port in FASTag: As soon as the bank is changed, the same tag will be linked to the new bank, know what is OneTag?

Business Desk – The government has started a new facility for people using FASTag. Now if a FASTag user wants to change his bank, he will not need to remove the old FASTag sticker on the windshield of the vehicle or get a new physical tag installed. That means FASTag can now be ported like a mobile SIM.

The name of this new feature is OneTag. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari launched it during the Global Fintech Fest 2026 held in Mumbai on Friday. The fest was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 September. Friday was its last day.

Now what did one have to do when changing banks?

Currently FASTag is linked to a bank. If the user had to change his bank, then the old FASTag account had to be closed first. After this, the process for FASTag had to be completed again in the new bank.

In this entire process a new FASTag was issued. That means, the old sticker on the windshield of the vehicle had to be removed and a new physical FASTag had to be installed. Due to this, the user had to undergo additional process and hassle of new tag to change the bank.

What will change now?

After the launch of OneTag facility, FASTag users will not need to get a new sticker to change the bank. The same FASTag installed on the vehicle can be ported between different banks.

That means it can be understood like a mobile number. Just as you can change your mobile network without changing the mobile number, similarly now the bank associated with FASTag can be changed without changing the physical tag. With this, the user will not need to remove the old FASTag and paste a new tag.

There will be no change at toll plaza

After the introduction of OneTag, there will be no change in the way of passing through the toll plaza. FASTag will work as before and the toll amount will be deducted automatically.

There will be no need to stop the vehicle at the toll plaza or complete any additional process. The change will mainly be in the backend system.

Bank information will be updated in the backend

The process of changing bank under OneTag will be completed in the backend. The information of the new bank will be updated through the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) system. This means that instead of getting a new tag installed, the user will get the facility to link the existing FASTag to the new bank.

How will this benefit users?

With this facility the process of changing FASTag will become easier. On changing the bank, there will be no need to get a new tag, remove the old tag and put the new tag on the windshield of the vehicle.

Apart from this, the need for repeatedly making, dispatching and re-issuing new FASTags will also be reduced. This can help reduce the use of physical stickers associated with FASTag and reduce plastic waste.

Will the method of toll deduction change?

No. The method of deducting tax at toll plazas will remain the same as before. The vehicle will be able to pass through the FASTag lane as before and the toll amount will be deducted from the account linked to FASTag. The biggest change for the user is that the physical sticker of FASTag will not have to be changed if the bank is changed.

What is RFID?

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is used in FASTag. Through this, the machine installed at the toll plaza reads the information of the FASTag installed on the windshield of the vehicle with the help of radio waves. Due to this technology, there is no need to stop the vehicle completely at the toll and the toll amount is deducted electronically.

What is NETC?

National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) is an interoperable system of FASTag based toll collection in the country. It works to ease FASTag related transactions between toll plazas, banks and vehicle owners. After changing the bank in OneTag also, the new bank information related to FASTag will be updated through this digital system.
