FIFA World Cup 2026 became the most explosive tournament. Record of most goals broken in 59th match. Many matches still left.
New Delhi. FIFA World Cup 2026 has created new history in terms of goals. This tournament, being jointly hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico, has not even completed half the journey but the record of most goals scored in one edition has already been broken. The new 48-team format has made the World Cup more exciting than ever and there is a continuous rain of goals on the field.
The 173rd goal of the World Cup was recorded during the match played between America and Turkey in the 59th match of the tournament. With this, the record of 172 goals scored in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar was left behind. After this the number of goals continued to increase and till now a total of 177 goals have been scored. The special thing is that many big matches of the knockout stage are still left, due to which there is every possibility of this figure going further.
The biggest reason behind this record is believed to be the new format of the World Cup. For the first time, 48 teams have been included in the tournament. Earlier, from 1930 to 2022, 32 teams used to participate in the World Cup and a total of 64 matches were played. Now the number of matches has increased to 104, due to which players are getting more opportunities to score goals and spectators are getting to watch more exciting matches.
Many star players have also set new records in this World Cup. Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo scored against Uzbekistan to become the first male footballer to score in six consecutive World Cups. Even at the age of 41, his excellent performance continues.
France’s star player Kylian Mbappe also maintained his excellent form and made the record of scoring two or more goals in a match six times in World Cup history. His total number of World Cup goals has reached 16. Argentina captain Lionel Messi is also in excellent form with 18 goals.
Vinicius Junior of Brazil has also firmly joined the race for the Golden Boot. His two goals against Scotland played a vital role in Brazil’s passage to the next round. Under the new format, with every team getting at least three matches in the group stage, the players have increased opportunities to perform better and score more goals.
If we look at the history of the World Cup, a total of 70 goals were scored in the first tournament in 1930. After this, a record of 171 goals was made in 1998 and 2014 and 172 goals in 2022. Now the 2026 World Cup has left all these achievements behind. Football experts believe that if the current pace continues, the total number of goals scored till the final can cross the 200 mark. With this, this World Cup is moving towards becoming the most memorable edition so far in terms of both goals and thrills.
