FIFA World Cup: Goalkeeper Eloy Room created history, made 15 brilliant saves as Curaçao stopped Ecuador from a historic draw
Kansas City: Curaçao, the smallest country participating in the World Cup football, has created history. In a thrilling Group E match, Curaçao secured its first point in World Cup history by holding strong rivals Ecuador to a goalless draw 0-0. The only hero of this historic success of Curaçao was 37-year-old experienced goalkeeper Eloy Room, who stood like a wall and stopped not one or two but all 15 shots of Ecuador from going through the goal post.
Alloy Room registered its name in the pages of history
After the crushing 7-1 defeat in the last match against Germany, goalkeeper Eloy Room made a brilliant comeback. According to World Cup statistics being recorded since 1966, Roome has now become the second goalkeeper in the world to make the most saves in a match. The record for making most 16 saves in a match in World Cup history is held by America’s Tim Howard (2014 vs Belgium).
Heavy pressure from Ecuador since the first half
The stadium was completely filled with Ecuadorian fans in yellow jerseys. From the opening minutes of the match, Ecuador played aggressively and created many excellent chances to score goals.
– Valencia’s omission: Ecuador’s experienced forward Ener Valencia had a very easy opportunity to score, but goalkeeper Roome made a brilliant save by diving to his left.
Room became a trouble-shooter in the second half also
Even in the second half, Ecuador did not reduce the pace of its attacks. Star player Moises Caicedo and Valencia made several strong attempts to score, but none of them were successful in front of Eloy Room. Room made two incredible saves in the final moments of the match even on a corner kick to ensure a historic draw for his team.
Group-E equation becomes interesting
The biggest advantage of this goalless draw has been to Germany, which had earlier defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 and is now on top of the group. However, with this result all four teams of Group E are still in the race for the knockout, but the road ahead has become very difficult for Ecuador.
