Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met with the head of IMF

New Delhi, 02 September 2026: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the meeting of G-20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors held in Asheville, USA. Both the leaders discussed the global economic situation and the pace of India's development.

The Finance Ministry said in a statement that the two leaders stressed the importance of continued cooperation between India and the IMF to strengthen analytical capacity, promote sound macro-economic policies and contribute to global economic resilience.

Ms Kristalina praised India's strong economic performance and its best performance so far. He also emphasized on the resilience of the Indian economy. The Finance Minister stressed the importance of India's strong macro-economic fundamentals and an effective monitoring framework based on reliable data.
