New Delhi: Kolkata Police has registered a suo motu FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee for allegedly violating a Calcutta High Court order during a rally organized by the party's student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP).
The case was filed at Hastings Police Station following allegations that the conditions laid down by the court for the event were not followed.
High Court Had Allowed TMCP Foundation Day Event
The Calcutta High Court had permitted Mamata Banerjee and the TMC student wing to hold the TMCP foundation day program on August 28 at Cathedral Road in Kolkata.
However, the court had directed organizers to keep one flank of the road open to ensure smooth movement of traffic and public access during the event. Police officials claimed that the condition was not followed and the entire stretch was blocked during the programme.
Police Allege Rally Continued Beyond Permitted Time
Apart from the road management issue, Kolkata Police also alleged that the event continued beyond the time limit approved by the High Court.
An officer said the FIR was registered against Mamata Banerjee and the organizers of the TMCP program for alleged violation of court directions.
“The role of all those involved in the violation will be examined during the course of the investigation,” the officer said. The investigation will now determine whether the organizers or other individuals associated with the rally were responsible for the alleged breach of the High Court's order.
