Special devotion to Shiva starts from the first day of Sawan.
In Hindu religion, the month of Saavan is considered dedicated to Lord Shiva and its first day has special religious significance. From this day itself, the process of worship, Rudrabhishek and Jalabhishek starts in Shiva temples. In the morning, after taking bath in Brahma Muhurta and wearing clean clothes, devotees worship Lord Shiva. Many people also take a pledge to keep fast for the entire Sawan Monday from this day.
According to religious beliefs, worshiping Lord Shiva with a true heart during Sawan is considered a means to remove obstacles in life and attain mental peace. This is the reason why a large number of devotees reach major Shiva temples across the country on this day for darshan and worship.
Do auspicious worship of Lord Shiva like this
On the first day of Sawan, the puja starts with meditation of Lord Shiva and worship of Ganesha. After this, Gangajal or clean water is offered on Shivling. Many devotees also perform Abhishekam with Panchamrit, which uses milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar. After Abhishek, Belpatra, Dhatura, Bhang, white flowers, sandalwood, Akshat and seasonal fruits are offered.
Chanting “Om Namah Shivay” mantra, reciting Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and reciting Shiv Chalisa during the puja is considered auspicious. After this, Aarti of Lord Shiva is performed by lighting incense sticks and praying for the happiness, prosperity, health and well-being of the family. If possible, donating food, clothes or other useful items to needy people on this day is also considered auspicious.
Spiritual importance of fasting and Jalabhishek
The fast observed on the first day of Sawan is not only considered a religious tradition but also a symbol of self-control and discipline. Many devotees consume fruits or satvik food and remember the name of Lord Shiva throughout the day. There is a religious belief that performing Jalabhishek on this day brings peace to the mind and develops positive thinking within the person.
According to mythology, during the churning of the ocean, Lord Shiva drank Halahal poison to save the world. To reduce the effect of poison, the gods offered water to them, since then the tradition of Jalabhishek is considered prevalent in Sawan. For this reason, devotees offer water to Shivalinga with reverence.
With devotion we get the message of positive life.
The first day of Sawan is not limited only to worship, but it also gives the message of restraint in life, service, morality and respect for nature. During this time, special emphasis is given on adopting a virtuous lifestyle, staying away from anger and doing good works.
According to religious scholars, Lord Shiva is called Bholenath because he is easily pleased with true faith and sincere devotion. Therefore, worship performed as per rituals on the first day of Sawan is considered a symbol of faith, spiritual progress and the beginning of a positive life. This is the reason why every year crores of devotees worship Lord Shiva on this day and seek his blessings.
