Ditch the frying pan for alternative to make perfect French toast

French toast makes for an ideal breakfast when you fancy starting the day with something warm and indulgent, yet cooking it on the hob can often feel like far too much effort. Nobody wants to spend their morning standing over a frying pan, not only because it’s time-consuming, but also because it inevitably results in oil splattering across the kitchen worktops.

It’s also common for the oil to cook the outside of the bread too rapidly, leaving it burnt while the inside remains undercooked and soggy. However, Michelle, the founder of Now Cook This, has revealed a considerably simpler approach — cooking French toast in the oven. Michelle said: “The first time I made French toast in the oven, I couldn’t believe how easy and delicious it was. It’s been my go-to ever since. And I’d be willing to bet that, once you try it, it’ll become yours too!”

Many people are unaware that French toast can be cooked in the oven, meaning you needn’t stand over the hob constantly turning the bread.

This method allows you to prepare a generous batch all at once without needing to keep a watchful eye on it, freeing you up to brew a coffee, make a cup of tea, or simply unwind while it bakes.

Cooking French toast in the oven also ensures every part of the bread cooks uniformly, producing a wonderfully crispy texture without any risk of burning or leaving the centre raw.

Opting for the oven is not only far more convenient, but it also spares you the hassle of dealing with a grease-splattered hob or scrubbing a burnt frying pan once you’ve finished cooking.

This is simply a superior method for achieving restaurant-quality French toast with minimal effort, allowing you to savour your morning rather than spending it fretting over a hot stove.

Method:

Begin by preheating the oven to 220°C (200°C for fan ovens or Gas Mark 7), then generously coat a large sheet pan tray with cooking spray.

Crack the eggs into a medium-sized bowl, then add the eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir thoroughly until all the ingredients are fully combined.

Pour the egg mixture into the tray, then arrange the bread slices in a single layer on top. Allow the bread to rest in the tray for one minute to absorb the moisture, then flip each slice over.

Leave them for a few minutes until all the egg batter has been fully absorbed. Then, transfer to the oven for 10 to 12 minutes until the French toast is perfectly crispy and golden.

Serve immediately straight from the oven, drizzling with butter, maple syrup, or any other toppings of your choice.
