First Tata Sierra With Spare Wheel Mounted On Door [Video]

Sierra was one of the most anticipated SUVs from Tata Motors last year. The SUV was launched last year, but deliveries only commenced in January 2026. One of the first things that many people liked about the new Sierra was its design. While the Harrier and Safari look rugged, the new Sierra was different as it looked premium. Many people on the internet even compared the SUV with the Defender because of its boxy design language. Deliveries for the Sierra have started, and many owners have even modified theirs. Here we have one such video of a Tata Sierra with a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate.

The video has been shared by Gaurav Dagar on his Instagram page. This is probably the first time we have come across such a modification on the Sierra. The original Sierra used to come with a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate. That used to give it a rugged look and went well with the SUV’s character. When the new Sierra came to the market, Tata decided to offer the spare wheel under the body of the vehicle at the rear.

This was done intentionally as Tata wanted to highlight the clean design of the SUV, along with the connecting LED bar and the sleek LED tail lamps at the rear. In this video, however, we see a Sierra with a spare wheel on the tailgate. The owner was probably not happy with the original position.

The spare wheel is now mounted at the centre of the tailgate, and it partially covers the rear windscreen, tailgate, LED connecting bar, and the Sierra badge at the bottom. We have seen many people replace the stock wheels with aftermarket ones in the past. However, this is the first time we have seen someone install the spare wheel on the tailgate of a Sierra. In that sense, it is indeed a unique modification.

While this modification looks cool, it should be noted that we do not recommend anyone do such mods. The tailgate on the higher variants of the Tata Sierra comes with an electric opening and closing function. This feature is controlled by a motor. By adding a spare wheel to the tailgate, you are adding additional weight, and the motor is not rated to handle it. This may affect the efficiency of the feature, and being unable to handle the extra weight, the motor may fail sooner than expected.

Even if you opt for a lower trim, the additional weight on the tailgate is not a great thing. The tailgate on the Sierra opens upwards, and with this spare wheel mounted on it, a person trying to open the door may struggle. The hydraulic struts that handle the weight may not be able to cope with the additional load and could wear out prematurely.

The video mentions that the SUV, with the spare wheel on the tailgate, now looks like a Defender. However, we beg to differ. It does not look like a Defender, and we feel the owner simply wanted to do justice to the Sierra brand, which is probably why he went ahead with this modification.

The Sierra is available with 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, and 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine options. All these engine options are available with a manual transmission, except the turbo-petrol. The turbo-petrol gets a 6-speed automatic transmission, the naturally aspirated petrol gets a DCA, and the turbo-diesel gets an automatic transmission option.
