A football coach from Maharashtra’s Palghar district was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting and blackmailing a minor for over three years.
Abhijit Mendal, the accused, has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused has been arrested and reportedly assaulted the 17-year-old under the pretext of mentoring her.
According to police, Mendal repeatedly raped the victim, who had joined his football training academy in Vasai in 2023 and even made objectionable videos of her and later used them to blackmail her when she began to distance herself.
He is also accused of recording videos and photographs of the assaults.
The victim mustered courage and finally approached the police with her family and filed a complaint against the coach, which led to Mandal’s arrest.
The investigation is underway, and a case has been registered under POSCO on charges including rape, sexual assault and criminal intimidation.
