What is G-7 conference, what is its history?

The story of formation of G7 is also quite interesting. In fact, the 1970s was a time when the entire global economy was in trouble due to rising oil prices. Especially because of the arbitrariness of the organization of oil producing countries – Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

    1975

The impact of the restrictions imposed on oil exports by OPEC was such that America’s Finance Minister George Shultz called a meeting. In the first meeting, six countries gathered and discussed how to deal with the economic crises. It was decided that these countries would meet again after a year and review the steps taken.

    1976

When this meeting was held again after a year, Canada was also made a part of it. This is how G7 came into existence.

    1977

The President of the European Commission (EC) was also invited to the G7 meetings. Collectively, Europe did not become part of the G7.

    1997

Russia was included in this group. After this it became G-8. However, after Ukraine’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, Russia was suspended from the group and it reverted to the G-7.
