Gang of thieves arrested after encounter in Rae Bareli, police seize 12.4 kg silver jewellery

Rae Bareli: Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli police have busted an inter-district gang involved in thefts from jewellers’ shops and arrested five of its members. During a police encounter, two criminals were shot in the legs, while three others were arrested after a cordon and search operation. 12 kg 400 grams of silver jewellery, illegal weapons and the car used in the theft have been seized from the possession of the accused. According to the police, on the intervening night of August 3 and 4, 2026, unidentified thieves broke into five jewellers’ shops located at Takiya Char Road in Milaria police station area and stole silver jewellery and other items.

Police said that in this case, on the complaint of Shubham Maurya, a case was registered at the Milaria police station under Section 305 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). To solve this case, a joint team of SOG, Surveillance and Miliaria police station was formed under the direction of Superintendent of Police Ravi Kumar, under the supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police Alok Singh and headed by Circle Officer Nagar Ashish Nigam. On the intervening night of August 6 and 7, the police received information that some people were distributing stolen goods near Sharda Canal Bridge in Lonian Ka Purva and were planning another theft. As soon as the information was received, the police cordoned off the area.

Police say that during the cordon, the criminals opened fire on the police team. In response, Shivkumar was shot in the right leg and Bablu in the left leg. Both were sent for treatment to the district hospital in Rae Bareli. Rakesh alias Chhote, Lavkush and Sagar Verma were arrested from the spot. The arrested accused have been identified as Shivkumar, Bablu, Rakesh alias Chhote, Lavkush and Sagar Verma. All the accused are residents of Sitapur district, while Rakesh’s current address has also been given as Lakhimpur Kheri. According to the police, Sagar Verma is a goldsmith by profession.
