State Eco Tourism Committee Chairman Raj Basu said, “There was a possibility that the price of commercial gas would increase after the polls. But it was not expected to increase so much at once. The biggest impact will be on hotels, restaurants, catering and street food businesses. Because commercial gas is the main fuel there. As a result, many traders may be forced to increase food prices. Hotel rents will increase. As a result, tourists’ pockets will be strained.” It is known that the price of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has increased by Tk 994. The new price is Rs 3,202. As a result of the increase in the price of commercial gas, hotel and restaurant businessmen have become worried. Due to the increase in gas prices, many people are in a quandary whether to increase the price of food, or to keep restaurants closed.
Darjeeling Hotel Association president Vijay Khanna said, “There is no way. Hotel rents will go up. Food prices will also have to go up.” That is, hoteliers in various tourist centers including Darjeeling may be forced to increase room rent or package prices to meet their expenses. Restaurant prices may increase. Increase in food cost and hotel rent will increase the travel cost of tourists. It will not be possible for many to afford. Small hotels and eateries may also face losses. All in all, an increase in the price of commercial LPG gas will have a negative impact on the tourism industry.
