Melissa McCarthy revealed why her time on Gilmore Girls pushed her to the limit. The actor reflected on the show’s uniquely demanding scripts and praised creator Amy Sherman-Palladino’s fight to protect her vision.

Melissa McCarthy described the intense demands of working on Gilmore Girls in a new interview with Variety. She called the experience genuinely difficult but accepted it as normal for her first major show.
“It was hard! It was really hard,” McCarthy said. “But to me, that was normal, because it was my first show.” She recalled receiving lengthy scripts with strict rules about dialogue. “Our scripts are 93 pages, and you can’t change a contraction, even if you get them that morning and it’s a 10-page oner,” she added.
McCarthy played chef Sookie St. James on the beloved dramedy from 2000 to 2007. Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino ran the show with exacting standards for her distinctive dialogue style. McCarthy acknowledged that Sherman-Palladino needed that firm approach during that era.
“I love that she had her own style, and I love that she built that world,” McCarthy said. She also recognized the challenges Sherman-Palladino faced as a female showrunner at the time. “A woman running that show at that time, I think you kind of had to be like, ‘It’s my way or the highway,’” McCarthy explained. She believes the creator likely had to fight to maintain her creative vision.
McCarthy expressed gratitude that Sherman-Palladino held her ground on the show’s direction. “I’m glad she did, because it stood the test of time,” she said. The show continues to resonate with audiences across generations, particularly with Gen Z viewers. “People really take ownership of that show,” McCarthy noted.
The actor went on to break out in 2011’s Bridesmaids and earned two Oscar nominations across her career. She next stars in Netflix’s The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, premiering Dec. 10. McCarthy serves as both actor and executive producer on that project.
