Global Indian influence grows as India’s prestige soars

India’s expanding diaspora is strengthening global influence, investment, innovation, and national confidence worldwide.
“Indians blend into the culture of any country they move to just like sugar dissolves in milk. When one dream is fulfilled, another is born. Besides being a nation of 1.4 billion people driven by aspirations, we are also the world’s fastest-growing major economy.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made this observation in a warm and engaging address to a massive gathering of the Indian community at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium during his visit to Australia. His words carried a deeper message.
Today, the issue is discussed both with admiration and criticism: Are increasing numbers of Indians leaving the country to settle abroad? The question has become a subject of debate in Parliament, universities, industry and among ordinary citizens.
Another development has intensified this debate over the past few years. Every year, more than 200,000 Indians renounce their Indian citizenship to acquire citizenship in countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany and others. But does this necessarily mean that India is witnessing a growing brain drain? Or does it reflect the fact that many countries, impressed by the talent of Indians and India’s remarkable progress, are eager to welcome them with open arms?
Moreover, Indians living and working overseas send a substantial share of their income and savings back to India to support their families and invest in businesses. Therefore, this issue must be examined not merely through emotions, but through facts, data and the realities of a rapidly changing global economy.
According to figures presented by the Ministry of External Affairs in Parliament, more than 2.06 million Indians renounced their citizenship between 2011 and 2024. In each of the years 2022, 2023 and 2024, the number exceeded 200,000. In 2024, as many as 206,378 Indians gave up their citizenship, compared with 216,219 in 2023 and 225,620 in 2022. Considering India’s population of nearly 1.4 billion, these numbers are not exceptionally large.
However, one important fact must be kept in mind while interpreting these figures. Most of these individuals had moved abroad years earlier as students, engineers, doctors, researchers, entrepreneurs or professionals and became eligible for citizenship only after obtaining permanent residency. Therefore, the number of people renouncing Indian citizenship in a given year does not represent the number of people who actually left India during that year.
Government data and official records from various countries show that Indians are primarily acquiring citizenship in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, the Netherlands, France and Italy. These countries already have well-established Indian communities and offer extensive opportunities in higher education, healthcare, information technology, finance, research and engineering.
A common perception is that people give up Indian citizenship solely to obtain a more powerful passport. That is not the complete picture. There are several reasons behind the decision.
The first is long-term security of residence and employment. After spending years on work permits, many people opt for citizenship to avoid repeatedly renewing visas and work authorisations.
The second is their children’s future. Becoming a citizen allows children to study at local universities at lower tuition costs, qualify for scholarships and enjoy better employment opportunities.
The third reason is social security. Developed countries generally provide stronger pension systems, healthcare coverage, unemployment benefits and old-age support.
The fourth is global career mobility. For professionals employed by multinational corporations, foreign citizenship makes it easier to work and relocate across multiple countries. In addition, passports issued by countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada and Australia provide visa-free or simplified entry to numerous destinations. This is particularly valuable for people engaged in international business, research and corporate careers.
