Good news for Agniveers: Two-year extension in service tenure; CDS provides the information

18,000 Agniveers were to be retired from the armed forces after a few weeks.

New Delhi. The government on Wednesday announced extension of service of two years to 'Agniveers'. This decision was taken in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This step has been taken at a time when about 18,000 Agniveers were to be retired from the armed forces after a few weeks.

Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General N S Raja Subramani said all fire fighters will be given an opportunity to continue their service in the armed forces. CDS said that this opportunity will depend on their performance and its assessment. Under the 'Agneepath' scheme, Agniveers were recruited for a tenure of four years. There was a provision that only 25 percent of these Agniveers would be retained in regular service.
