New Delhi. After Microsoft, now Google has also taken steps towards controlling the number of its employees and expenses. Google's parent company Alphabet has given some of its employees in many countries the option to voluntarily leave their jobs this year. Under this, the employees who leave the job will be given financial compensation from the company.
According to a Reuters report, Google started this plan in June for some employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. The company confirmed this and said that in 2025, some of its teams had started a plan to leave their jobs voluntarily with compensation. In June this year, it was extended to some more countries.
According to the company spokesperson, the aim of this plan is to organize resources in a better way for important future work. However, till now the information has not been revealed as to how many employees have accepted this offer. At least four people in a team of 50 employees accepted the offer.
Preparation to reduce expenses amid heavy investment on AI
This step of Google has come at a time when the world's big tech companies are rapidly investing in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Companies are having to spend heavily in developing this technology and creating the infrastructure related to it. The rising expenses have also affected investors' concerns and Alphabet's shares. Although Alphabet's headcount has grown steadily in recent quarters, the company now looks to shift its resources toward priority areas.
Offer of up to 12 months salary in Switzerland
About 5,000 Google employees work in Switzerland. Here the company has given the option to employees of many departments to leave the job voluntarily. Under this, there was a proposal to give one month's salary to the employees for every year they worked in the company. However, the maximum limit of compensation was fixed at 12 months' salary. This means that even employees working in the company for 12 years or more were to get a maximum salary of 12 months only.
Microsoft also gave option to 60 thousand employees
Before Google, Microsoft had also introduced a voluntary attrition plan to control the number of employees and expenses. Last week, the company had given its approximately 60 thousand employees the option to leave their jobs with financial compensation.
Google had also started such schemes for the employees of some of its departments in America and Britain since last year. According to company officials, this option is for those employees who no longer feel comfortable with the company's working style, pace of work or future direction.
