New Delhi: To provide relief to the common people troubled by the rising prices of onion, the Central Government has decided to make onions available at cheaper rates. According to the information revealed, the government will now provide onions to consumers at a concessional price of Rs 35 per kg in selected cities and markets. Let us tell you, this decision has been taken by the government due to onion prices reaching Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg in some parts of the country. Through this objective, onion prices can be controlled.
Cheap onion will reach cities from Nashik
The government has taken the help of Railways to increase the supply of onion. Onions are being transported through special goods trains from the government buffer stock present in Nashik, Maharashtra to the cities where retail prices have seen a rise. These special trains have been named 'Kanda Express'.
The initial consignment of 'Kanda Express' has been sent to cities like Chennai, Madurai, Ernakulam and Guwahati. After this, preparations are being made to deliver another consignment of about 800 metric tons of onions to Delhi and other major cities of North India. Its objective is to ensure availability of onion on a large scale in a short time.
Sales from government outlets and mobile vans
According to the information, the responsibility of delivering onions directly to consumers at affordable rates has been given to government and cooperative institutions. Common people will be able to buy onions through NAFED, NCCF and Kendriya Bhandar. Apart from this, onion will also be made available at the rate of Rs 35 per kg in the mobile vans of NCCF and NAFED and at the outlets of 'Bharat Brand'.
Consumers will get relief
The government believes that the buffer stock in the market will help in controlling prices by continuously increasing the supply of onion. This can also curb hoarding and betting. Amidst the increase in onion prices due to the festive season and seasonal reasons, this step of the government is being considered as an important step towards directly providing relief to the kitchen budget of the consumers.
