An 18-foot-deep well in Gujarat’s Morbi district has become an unexpected attraction after its water continued to ripple and form waves for five days. The unusual movement initially raised fears of earthquake activity, but officials have ruled out any connection with seismic activity. What is causing the unusual water movement?
The well sits on the farm of Pranjivan Sadariya in Virparda village of Morbi taluka. Sadariya first noticed something unusual on August 2 when he arrived at his farm and saw water spilling over the edge of the well.
He said the water continued shaking on Sunday and Monday. The movement stopped briefly on Tuesday but returned on Wednesday and Thursday, drawing even more attention to the site.
The well was constructed only around three months ago. As news of the phenomenon spread, people from nearby villages began visiting the farm to see the unusual water movement for themselves.
Experts rule out earthquake activity
Morbi District Geologist J S Vadher said there is no evidence linking the Gujarat well ripples to seismic activity. Instead, he suggested that heavy rainfall could explain the phenomenon.
According to Vadher, heavy upstream rainfall may have increased groundwater recharge. As groundwater moves through the rocks, air trapped inside their pore spaces could escape and disturb the water inside the well, creating continuous ripples.
However, authorities have not yet confirmed this explanation through a detailed scientific study.
Experts to investigate the well
Morbi District Collector Swapnil Khare said the Gujarat government has received information about the unusual incident. A team of experts from Gandhinagar will visit the location and conduct a detailed investigation.
