Why is curd special for gut health?
According to experts, curd is a fermented dairy food. In the process of making it, the bacteria present in it change some of the components of the milk and it may contain live cultures. This is the reason why curd is considered as a gut friendly food. A systematic review found that consumption of fermented dairy products can improve gastrointestinal health. However, it is not necessary that its effect be the same in every person.
What is the benefit of eating curd in the afternoon?
One advantage of including curd in lunch is that it adds nutrients like protein and calcium to the meal. Apart from this, being fermented dairy, it can be digested more easily by some people than normal milk. Instead of adding too much sugar to sweeten the curd, taking plain curd can be a better option. If desired, raita can be made by adding roasted cumin, some black salt and cucumber to it.
Why does buttermilk seem so soothing in the heat?
Buttermilk is a popular drink in Indian homes during summer and the reason behind it is not only tradition but also the reason related to hydration. In a small study, giving buttermilk or water to people working in hot environments resulted in lower body temperature and heat-related discomfort compared to no hydration. However, this study was small, so definite conclusions cannot be drawn from it for every person.
Should everyone take curd and buttermilk?
Not necessary. People who have milk intolerance, allergy to any particular food item or problems like flatulence, pain or diarrhea after consuming curd-buttermilk, should consume it as per their tolerance. Also, sweet flavored yogurt in the market may contain high amount of added sugar.
So what to put in the plate?
If you find curd easily digested, then plain curd or light buttermilk can be a nutritious option with lunch. Instead of considering it as a cure for any disease, it is better to consider it as a part of a balanced diet. After all, gut health is not achieved by just a bowl of curd, but by a complete diet, adequate fiber, water, sleep and regular physical activity.
