Guwahati prepares for Diwali and Kali Puja with themed pandals.

Preparations are underway across Guwahati to celebrate Diwali and Kali Puja with elaborate ceremonies and culturally significant themes for various pandals.

The Vivekananda Sporting Club of Colony Bazar, Kalapahar, has crafted a pandal themed “Colour of Soil – Tea, Bamboo & Rang Ghar” to honor Assam’s heritage. This installation commemorates the bicentenary of Assam tea, features the historic Rang Ghar of the Ahom dynasty, and highlights the iconic one-horned rhinoceros.

Sashanka Chakraborty, an official of the Vivekananda Sporting Club, noted that the club is marking its 62nd Kali Puja celebration. He said, “Assam tea has completed 200 years, and we have chosen the Assam Tea theme for our puja pandal. Around 1,500 bamboo poles have been used to construct the structure. Besides Assam tea and the historic Rang Ghar, we have also highlighted the world-famous one-horned rhino.”

Chakraborty further stated that their event represents the largest Kali Puja celebration in the North East, attracting thousands of devotees annually.

Throughout Guwahati, organizers and artisans are applying final touches to projects featuring vibrant lighting, detailed bamboo work, and thematic depictions of indigenous culture as the city readies itself for the festival of lights.

Deepotsav commemorates the return of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshmana to Ayodhya after 14 years in exile and Rama’s victory over Ravana.

Dhanteras, also known as Dhan Trayodashi, marks the start of the five-day Diwali festivities. It is traditionally associated with prosperity and good fortune, with many purchasing precious metals, vehicles, utensils, and other new items on this day.
