Hail fell in Delhi in the month of May itself, along with rain, alert of storm was also issued.

New Delhi: After facing the scorching heat for several days, the people of Delhi-NCR suddenly got relief on Saturday night. It rained with strong thunderstorms in many areas and hailstones also fell at some places. This sudden change in weather led to a drop in temperature, but the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the weather will remain unstable for the next few days.

Heavy rain on Delhi-Noida border

On Saturday night (02 May 2026), dark clouds suddenly appeared over the national capital and surrounding areas. Heavy rain was recorded at many places including Delhi-Noida border. The storm and strong winds startled people. This rain brought great relief after the temperature reached 44°C for the last several days.

IMD had already issued ‘Yellow Alert’ for Delhi and ‘Orange Alert’ for Noida and Ghaziabad. The department had expressed the possibility of heavy rain and storm in the evening. Officials had said that hail may also fall in some areas.

Why did the weather change suddenly?

According to meteorologists, the reason for this change is the collision of dry western winds and moisture-laden eastern winds. This collision triggered intense ‘convective activity’ across northwestern India. This is why storms were formed.

However, the rain will not be the same everywhere. It is estimated that 20 to 30 percent of Delhi-NCR, 30 to 40 percent of Haryana, and 50 percent of Western Uttar Pradesh may receive heavy rain or hailstorm. Dense clouds were also seen forming over the area in radar images.

Danger of waterlogging and lightning

Officials associated with the Meteorological Department have warned of waterlogging in low-lying areas. People have been appealed not to go to open places during lightning. There is a possibility of intermittent further intensification of the weather system, hence caution is necessary.

Relief from heat wave like conditions

This rain has come after the scorching heat in Delhi-NCR. In late April the temperature reached almost 44°C in some areas. ‘Heat alert’ had to be issued. Due to heat wave-like conditions, the demand for electricity had increased and it became difficult to go out.

However, due to the intermittent ‘Western Disturbance’ in April 2026, there was relief from time to time. There was good rain in the beginning of this week also. The temperature had dropped and the air quality had improved.

The next few days will be full of ups and downs

It is noteworthy that meteorologists say that the process of rain along with heat and thunder will continue. Convective activity is expected to further intensify over northwest India. Residents have been advised to monitor weather warnings. The weather can change continuously till evening. There is a possibility of intermittent storms. Therefore, do not leave the house without essential work and stay safe.
