Hamburg now just one game from safety after victory against Eintracht Frankfurt

After failing to win for six games, Hamburg produced an impressive comeback victory away to Eintracht Frankfurt to all but confirm their status in the Bundesliga next season.

When Can Uzun opened the scoring for Frankfurt on Saturday, Hamburg fans would have been fearing the worst, given their recent dismal run.

However, Merlin Polzin’s players responded emphatically, with Albert Grønbæk equalising just three minutes later. Fábio Vieira then completed the turnaround just eight minutes after that with a tidy touch and finish after Grønbæk’s perfect pass to clinch a 2-1 win.

There were jubilant celebrations at the final whistle, as the result means that HSV cannot finish lower than the relegation play-off place, as current incumbents St. Pauli take on 17th-placed Wolfsburg on the final day of the season.

In fact, Hamburg’s safety could even be confirmed on Sunday should both sides fail to win their respctive Matchday 32 fixtures. Failing that, Hamburg can secure their safety themselves next weekend when they host Freiburg.

Speaking after the game, Polzin was delighted with his team’s performance: “We’re very happy because all the hard work in training over the last few weeks and months is paying off.

“These are the moments when you stand in front of the stand and see how happy the lads are. Everyone has their own burdens to bear, but they put HSV first. Now we want to prepare well so that, as a newly promoted side, we can give our fans a great final home game.”

Goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes also expressed the importance of Hamburg’s win: “Today marks a huge step towards our goal. We’re right on the cusp. We’re absolutely delighted.”
