Hasan Mahmud scripts history, becomes first Bangladesh pacer to take Test hat-trick

Bangladesh pace bowler Hasan Mahmud gave himself an early birthday gift when he became the first pacer from his country to take a Test hat-trick. The feat was achieved on day three of the ongoing BAN vs AFG, one-off Test match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Mahmud, who turns 27 on Monday, wreaked havoc in the 83rd over, when he first dismissed Ismat Alam for one run on the third ball of the over. The batter was beaten for pace.

On the next ball, Qais Ahmed was caught behind by Litton Das for a first-ball duck. The batter got a thick outside edge, and Das initially misjudged the catch but then regained his balance to complete the grab.

The hat-trick was complete when the seamer wrapped Zia Ur Rahman on his pads, and there was a huge appeal. The umpire gave it not out, but Najmul Hossain Shanto decided to review the call. The batter had tried to clip the ball straight down the ground and didn’t get any edge. Once the screen showed all three reds, the entire team let out a huge roar, and the bowler celebrated wildly after achieving the historic feat.

The pacer then completed his fifer when Ahmadzai was caught by Litton for a duck in the 87th over. Afghanistan, who ended the second day on 211/4, lost five wickets for just 14 runs in a space of eight overs. Rahmat Shah could only stand and watch as the rest of his teammates fell like nine pins against the Bangladesh pace attack.

When Hasan Mahmud stunned the Aussies

The bowler was in fine form during the tour of Australia, taking nine wickets in the first Test. He picked up 6/55 in the first innings of the Darwin Test and followed it up with three more scalps in the second innings to help his side achieve a famous win on Australian soil for the first time.

This was followed by a short stint with Kent in England’s county cricket circuit, where he claimed 14 wickets from four innings.
