Hayden was impressed by the aggressive batting of 15-year-old Vaibhav, but will this storm last long?
New Delhi. Former Australian batsman Matthew Hayden has praised the aggressive batting of 15-year-old Indian batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi. However, he also advised the young players that before copying Suryavanshi’s fearless style, it is important to understand whether this kind of game can remain consistently successful for a long time.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who is in the news for his possible debut in international cricket, has caught the attention of the cricket world with his aggressive batting at a young age. His style of attacking every ball in T20 cricket is giving him a different identity.
The style of both Shubhman Gill and Vaibhav can be successful.
When Matthew Hayden, who watched Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s batting from the dugout of Gujarat Titans during the Indian Premier League (IPL), was asked whether Shubman Gill’s technical batting and Vaibhav’s explosive style could be successful together in T20 cricket, he replied in the affirmative.
Hayden told PTI that both Shubhman Gill and Vaibhav Suryavanshi are players with different personalities and both of their batting styles can be successful. However, the most important question for any young player is whether an aggressive style like Vaibhav can be sustained for a long time.
International cricket is the real measure
Matthew Hayden believes that Shubman Gill has already proved that long-term success in international cricket can be achieved on the basis of strong technique and consistent performance. He said that for him international cricket is the real test and highest standard of any player.
Messi’s example
Citing the example of football star Lionel Messi, Hayden said that just as Messi has been consistently successful in different conditions for both club and country, similarly in cricket there is enough room for different batting styles.
He said that as a coach it is always his endeavor to help the players recognize the warrior within them. The background, thinking and way of playing cricket of both Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Shubhman Gill are different and this is the biggest beauty of the game.
Didn’t copy Brian Lara
Giving examples from his career, Hayden said that he was a big fan of the great batsman Brian Lara, but he never tried to copy his batting. He developed himself according to his circumstances and natural style, which made him one of the successful batsmen of world cricket.
Hayden said that every great player in the world of sports becomes great because of his unique identity. He stressed that the responsibility of the coach is to identify the fundamental talent of the players, hone it and make their game sustainable in the long run.
