Hazrat Abbas Alamdar (Alaihis Salaam): A great example of loyalty, bravery and God.

Writer – Tabassum Abbas

There are some great personalities in Islamic history whose name brings before our eyes the picture of loyalty, bravery and sacrifice. Hazrat Abbas Alamdar (Alaihis Salaam) is one such great personality, whom the world remembers by the names of “Babul Hawaiz”, “Qamar-e-Bani Hashim” and “Alamdar-e-Karbala”. You set such an example for helping your brother Hazrat Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and protecting his rights, which will remain a source of inspiration for humanity till the end of time.

Birth and early life
Hazrat Abbas (Alaihis Salaam) was born on 4 Shaban 26 Hijri in Madina Munawwara. Your father was Hazrat Ali Ibne Abi Talib (peace be upon him), the fourth Caliph and cousin of Rasoolullah ﷺ, while your mother was Hazrat Ummul Baneen (may Allah be pleased with him). Since childhood, you received training in knowledge, virtue and piety from your father.

Hazrat Abbas (Alaihis Salaam) was called “Qamar-e-Bani Hashim” i.e. “Moon of Bani Hashim” due to his beauty, high character and unmatched bravery.

Unwavering love for Imam Hussain
Hazrat Abbas (Alaihis Salaam) loved his elder brother Hazrat Imam Hussain (Alaihis Salaam) very much. You always considered Imam Hussain as your Maula and Rahbar. Even during the journey to Karbala, you supported your brother at every step and protected him till your last breath.

Hazrat Abbas’s role in Karbala
On 10 Muharram 61 Hijri, when the Yazidi army cut off water from Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and his companions in the plains of Karbala, the thirst of the children and women became unbearable. Hazrat Abbas (peace be upon him) took the initiative to bring water from the Euphrates River.

With your bravery you succeeded in breaking the enemy’s encirclement and reaching the Euphrates. When you filled the water and got the opportunity to drink it yourself, you did not drink it in the memory of your thirsty brother and your family. This is such an example of loyalty and God, whose other example is difficult to find in the world.

“O Nafs! Hussain is thirsty and you drink water? I swear by God, this is not the way of the faithful.”

painful scene of martyrdom
When Hazrat Abbas (peace be upon him) was returning to the camps after filling water in the waterskin, the enemies attacked from all sides. First your right hand and then your left hand were cut off, but you did not let the wineskin fall. Finally an arrow hit the wineskin and a blow was made on your head, due to which you fell on the ground.

Hearing your voice, Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) came to you. Seeing this condition of his faithful brother, Imam Hussain’s eyes became moist. Hazrat Abbas (Alaihis Salaam) drank the cup of martyrdom on 10 Muharram 61 Hijri and became immortal forever.
