The hearing of the case of collapse of five-storey building in Delhi's Satya Niketan may be transferred from Delhi High Court to the Supreme Court. On Thursday, September 10, during the hearing of a case related to illegal construction and disregard for safety standards, the Supreme Court indicated that it may take up the case. The Supreme Court said that for the time being it wants to keep its hearing focused on aspects related to land use. During the hearing, Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah said, “We are worried about the entire country.” He also said that after about two months it will be understood what the court wants to do in this case.

The Supreme Court said that such activities should not be allowed in residential areas, which cause problems in the movement of people or do not leave space for children to play. Expressing concern over land use and planning of residential areas, the court said that it is necessary to ensure that rules are followed in such areas. The Supreme Court also indicated that it may transfer the case related to the collapse of the five-storey building in Delhi's Satya Niketan from the Delhi High Court to itself. This may pave the way for hearing the case on a broader scale and investigating aspects related to land use.

How did the building collapse?

On September 6, a five-storey building suddenly collapsed in Satya Niketan area of ​​South Delhi. Seven people died in the accident, while five people were injured. In the case, police have arrested building owner Urmila Gupta, 75, her husband Hariram Gupta, 81, retired from the Air Force, and her son Mahesh Gupta, 52.

Delhi Police had said on Wednesday that during the interrogation of an accused, important information regarding the reason for the building collapse came to light. According to the police, a wall was demolished to build a shop on the ground floor of the building. It is alleged that after the wall was removed, the structure of the building weakened and due to this the entire five-storey building collapsed.
