What is the reason behind heart burn?
According to the Mayo Clinic, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is caused by repeated acid reflux or reflux of non-acidic stomach contents. In such a situation, when we swallow food, there is a band of muscles around the back part of the esophagus i.e. food pipe, which is called sphincter. In a way, the sphincter acts as a valve between our mouth and intestine. When we swallow food, it opens and as soon as the food goes inside the stomach, it closes automatically. But if the sphincter does not get proper rest or it becomes weak then the stomach acid starts rising and it seems as if the whole thing is pressing the chest. Continuous rise of acid upwards is a cause of trouble for the esophagus and can also cause swelling in it.
