JPSC-JSSC Reform: The anger of candidates in Jharkhand over alleged irregularities in the JPSC and JSSC examinations continues unabated. Thousands of youth in the state have been protesting on the streets for the past 16 days, raising their voices for their rights. Amidst this highly sensitive atmosphere, Chief Minister Hemant Soren has made an important appeal to the protesting youth. He has cautioned them to stay completely away from any kind of political patronage or influence from political parties. The Chief Minister stated clearly that the youth have a full right to justice and to be free from any kind of injustice.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren stated that it is due to the current government’s impartiality and strict measures that young people have found the courage to speak out against wrongdoing. The government’s actions have exposed the wrongdoers. He launched a direct attack on the opposition, saying that some individuals have lofty political ambitions. To further their political agenda, they are attempting to mislead the younger generation. Political parties across the country are employing various strategies to incite youth, mixing truth with lies to spread confusion.
Government and student delegation at the negotiating table
To resolve this serious crisis in the state, a round of talks has begun between the government and the agitating students. The third round of talks took place at the State Guest House in Ranchi between a four-member government-appointed group of ministers and a six-member delegation from the JPSC-JSSC Nyay Manch. Tight security arrangements have been made to prevent any untoward incident during this crucial meeting. A large police force has been deployed outside the State Guest House to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
ED probes financial transactions and issues 90-day ultimatum
During the talks, the government agreed to a major demand of the protesting students. Sources indicate that the government has agreed to have the Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigate the financial transactions of the exam-conducting agency, TDPL. The investigation has uncovered evidence of numerous financial irregularities against the agency. Furthermore, the state government has given written assurances to student leaders that all cases submitted to the CID will be investigated within 90 days, ensuring swift punishment for the perpetrators.
Cancellation of controversial exams and proposal for new reforms
In a move to end the agitation, the government has tabled several major proposals. The government says it will conduct an impartial investigation of all previous examinations conducted by the agency. The proposal to cancel the most controversial JPSC 14 and Backlog 25 examinations has also been agreed upon. To ensure complete transparency in the future examination system, consultations will be sought from renowned institutions such as IIT, ISM, Dhanbad, and XLRI, Jamshedpur.
The candidates are still on hunger strike on the 16th day.
On the other hand, the protesting students remain resolute. Despite the scorching sun and rain, many candidates are on an indefinite hunger strike. Representatives of the Student Justice Forum say that the government’s proposals are certainly an initial victory, but they will not be satisfied with mere verbal assurances. They will not back down until their core demands are met.
Demand for CBI inquiry and threat of gherao of Assembly
The students have stated clearly that the agitation will continue until all controversial exams are formally cancelled and the entire matter is handed over to the CBI for investigation. Student leaders have issued an ultimatum that if the talks fail to yield any concrete results, they will surround the Jharkhand Assembly on August 10. Currently, the entire state is focused on a resolution to this impasse.
