The lives of 8 tourists were lost in the 500 meter deep gorge of Chamba, this horrifying scene nearby will truly shock your soul.
Sach Pass Road Accident: A dark night of Friday brought never-ending mourning for 8 families, when a car went out of control on the inaccessible roads of Chamba and fell into the deep abyss of death. This accident is a stark warning of the deadly dangers that lie at every turn on narrow and snow-covered mountain roads.
The Bairgarh-Sach Pass-Killer route of Chamba district is famous throughout the world for its geographical complexities. Late on Friday night, when eight tourists in a car were passing through this inaccessible snow-covered road, the mood of nature was quite harsh. This area of Sach Pass is known for its extremely dangerous turns and narrow roads.
Slippage increased due to snow
According to initial information, visibility was very low in the silence of the night and due to snow accumulated on the road, there was a lot of slippage. Amidst this slippage and darkness, the driver lost control over the vehicle and the car fell straight into a 500 meter deep gorge. After falling from such a height, there was no chance of survival for any person traveling inside that vehicle.
Clue found after 14 hours
The magnitude of this accident can be gauged from the fact that the accident occurred on Friday night, but the administration or the local people did not get to know about it till Saturday afternoon the next day. In fact, that area is so deserted and difficult that there is almost no vehicular movement there at night.
On Saturday afternoon, when some local villagers were passing through that road, their eyes fell on the wreckage of the vehicle lying under the ditch. The scattered parts and the silence screamed and told the story of the tragedy that had happened there in the darkness of the night. The villagers immediately showed courage and without wasting any time informed the local administration about this heart-wrenching incident.
Rescue team struggles hard amidst deep ditch
As soon as the information was received, police and State Disaster Response Force teams left for the spot, but the real challenge was about to emerge. The geographical location of the incident site was so inaccessible that carrying out relief and rescue operations was no less than an ordeal. Steep slopes, 500 meter deep gorge and thick blanket of snow created major obstacles in the way of rescue teams. Moreover, having no means of communication became another major problem.
The MLA of Churah area said that the mobile network in that area was completely down, due to which huge difficulties were faced in coordinating between the rescue teams. All eight bodies could not be recovered till Saturday evening, due to which the operation had to be halted till Sunday morning.
When will this series of accidents stop?
This accident is not the first incident that happened on Sach Pass road. According to the villagers, this road has been witness to many major and painful accidents in the past also. Especially during the snowfall season, the risk here increases manifold. This incident has once again exposed the road safety and emergency communication system in the hilly areas.
Local people demand that keeping in view the weather conditions on such sensitive routes, traffic should be completely controlled and adequate security arrangements should be made. Experts also believe that it is essential to have a modern weather-based alert system and strong mobile network in the Himalayan regions, so that timely help can be provided and innocent lives can be saved.
