Himanta Biswa Sarma Oath: Himanta Biswa Sarma back on throne of Assam; Took oath as chief minister for the second time in a row

Himanta Biswa Sarma Oath: After the BJP’s landslide victory in the Assam assembly elections, Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the state’s chief minister for a second term on Tuesday (May 12). Himanta Biswa Sarma became the first non-Congress leader to serve as the Chief Minister of Assam for two consecutive terms. Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to him at a grand swearing-in ceremony held in Guwahati, the capital of Assam. Along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers and Union Ministers of many BJP-ruled states were also present on the occasion.

After being elected as the leader of the NDA Legislature Party, the Governor appointed him as Chief Minister on Sunday (May 10). This is the third consecutive term of the NDA government in Assam. Earlier, in 2016, Sarbanand Sonowal became the Chief Minister for the first time under BJP leadership, while Himanta Biswa Sarma took charge in 2021.

Today Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as Chief Minister for the second time after five years of tenure as Chief Minister. This swearing-in ceremony was considered very special. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, BJP National President Nitin Naveen along with Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled states were present on the occasion. Along with Himanta Biswa Sarma, four leaders Rameshwar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro (BPF) and Ajanta Neog also took oath as ministers.

Political journey of Himanta Biswa Sarma

Himanta Biswa Sarma left Congress party and joined BJP in 2015. At that time Congress was dominant in Assam and BJP had only five MLAs. Himanta Sharma worked strategically to strengthen the BJP in North East India. In 2016, the BJP appointed him as the convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). Subsequently, he played a key role in bringing the regional parties of Northeast India together with the BJP.

According to political analysts, the rapidly growing influence of the BJP in Northeast India was a major factor in Himanta Biswa Sharma’s policy. Sharma was educated in Guwahati and completed his schooling from Kamrup Academy. He then earned BA and MA in Political Science from Cotton College, then LLB from Government Law College and practiced as an advocate in the Guwahati High Court.

The beginning of the political journey from student status

In 2006, he received his PhD degree from Guwahati University. His political career started with student politics. In 1991-92, he served as the general secretary of the Cotton College Students’ Union and later joined the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). He joined the Congress party in the 1990s and became an MLA from Jalukbari constituency for the first time in 2001. Interestingly, since then, he has won this seat consistently.
