Historic moment for South Africa! Team reached World Cup knockout for the first time after defeating South Korea 1-0
Guadalupe (Mexico): Thapelo Maseko scored a brilliant goal as South Africa defeated South Korea 1-0 and reached the knockout stage for the first time in World Cup history.
In the 63rd minute, Maseko gave victory to the South African team by hitting the ball into the goal post from Tshepang Moremi’s accurate cross. With this thrilling win, South Africa finished second in Group A, while Mexico topped the group stage by winning all three of their matches.
Now we will face Canada
South Africa will face Group B second-place Canada in Inglewood, California in the knockout round on Sunday.
South Africa had previously failed to progress beyond the group stage at the World Cup in 1998, 2002 and 2010 (as hosts). This time the team made a great comeback. After losing 2-0 to Mexico in the first match, they played a 1-1 draw against Czech Republic and now created history by winning over South Korea.
South Korea’s hopes remain intact
South Korea started the tournament with a win over the Czech Republic, but suffered a 1–0 defeat at the hands of Mexico. However, their chances of reaching the knockouts as the best third-placed team are still alive.
South Korea, which became the first Asian team to reach the knockout by finishing fourth in 2002, has also reached the last 16 in 2010 and 2022.
