Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi has given a big statement welcoming the clean chit given by the Supreme Court to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in the coal mine allocation case. Sonia Gandhi said history will remember Manmohan Singh as a soft-spoken, gentle but one of the country's most influential Prime Ministers. He described the record of honesty and accountability of the former PM as completely contrary to the functioning of the current government. Sonia Gandhi's big statement on the Supreme Court's decision In her article written in an English newspaper, Sonia Gandhi said that 29 July 2026 was a very important day in Indian political history, when the Supreme Court completely upheld the clean chit given to Manmohan Singh on the basis of the CBI closure report in the alleged coal scam case. He said that the Supreme Court also rejected the decision of the lower court in which adverse remarks were made against the then Prime Minister without any solid basis. Sonia Gandhi called it the end of one of the saddest chapters of our public discourse. A well-planned campaign was launched against Manmohan Singh. Sonia Gandhi alleged that a very well-planned and coordinated campaign was launched against former PM Manmohan Singh, which involved the bureaucracy, media, judiciary, civil organizations, people associated with RSS and BJP. While making a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he referred to the statement given in Rajya Sabha on 8 February 2017 in which PM Modi had commented on Manmohan Singh as 'the art of bathing wearing a raincoat'. Sonia Gandhi called it the lowest level statement in parliamentary history. Economic record and achievements of 10 years of Manmohan Singh government: Sonia Gandhi praised the tenure of Manmohan Singh and said that India's economic growth during the 10 years of his government has been much better than the last 12 years even in comparison to the current methods of GDP calculation. He said that during this period lakhs of people were brought out of poverty. Apart from this, historic schemes like Right to Education, OBC reservation in higher educational institutions and National Food Security Act were implemented. Sonia Gandhi finally said that Manmohan Singh was always accountable to the Parliament and the media and he had held more than 100 press conferences during his tenure.
