Puducherry: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday handed over the prestigious ‘President’s Police Colours’ to the Puducherry Police. On this occasion, he said that the Central Government is committed to the development of Puducherry. The Central Government has allocated Rs 13,762 crore for the development of Puducherry from 2014 to 2026, whereas during the governments from 1950 to 2014, only Rs 3,500 crore was allocated, which is now almost four times more.
Amit Shah presented the prestigious ‘President’s Police Colours’ to the Puducherry Police at a function held at the Police Training Ground in Gorimedu, Puducherry. Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, among other dignitaries, were present at the function.
The award of the President’s Police Colours to a police force is a national recognition of its professional competence, courage, discipline and commitment to public service. It is one of the major institutional honours bestowed upon police organisations.
Speaking on the occasion, Amit Shah said, “Today, the Puducherry Police has joined the list of select police forces in the country to be awarded this highest honour. The conferment of the President’s Police Colours to the Puducherry Police is a testimony to the force’s bravery, hard work and dedication. This is one of their proudest moments. Puducherry is a living symbol of the spiritual and cultural consciousness of South India.”
He said that over the past nine years, the central government has encouraged industrial investment worth ₹39,000 crore in Puducherry. Initiatives such as Lakhpati Didi, Jal Jeevan Mission, Ayushman Bharat, construction of toilets, free food grains scheme, Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) have benefited the citizens of Puducherry.
Shah said that the Modi government has replaced the British-designed Penal Code with three new criminal laws. These new laws are not merely punitive but also aim to provide justice to citizens in a technology-based and timely manner. These new criminal laws are based on three pillars: technology, timeliness, and trust.
