Taking smartphone camera technology to a new level, Honor has announced the launch of its first robotic camera smartphone. The company will unveil this highly anticipated device in China on August 12th. This smartphone will feature a robotic camera system, a departure from traditional camera designs, developed to make the mobile photography and video recording experience more intelligent, stable, and professional. The company believes this technology could set a new direction for future smartphone cameras.
The smartphone’s most significant feature will be its robotic camera module. This camera will be able to extend from the top of the phone when needed and will have the ability to rotate in various directions. The camera will not only be limited to mechanical movement, but will also be able to automatically identify and track a person or object with the help of artificial intelligence. This can make recordings of moving subjects appear more stable and natural, and it will be easier to maintain framing during video shooting.
Honor says this technology will be especially useful for vloggers, content creators, and users who record videos in constant motion. The camera will consistently attempt to keep the subject in frame, significantly reducing the need for a separate gimbal or other stabilization device. The smartphone is also reported to include features like AI Tracking, Super Steady Video, and AI Spin Shot, which can make video recording more smooth and effective.
Regarding camera hardware, the smartphone is confirmed to feature a triple rear camera setup. Its main camera will be 200 megapixels, featuring a large 1/1.28-inch sensor and an f/1.6 aperture. Additionally, a 50 megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 200 megapixel periscope telephoto camera will also be provided. This camera combination can take better photos in low light, as well as capture subjects from long distances with greater clarity.
To elevate video recording to a cinematic level, Honor has partnered with ARRI, a renowned German cinema camera manufacturer. As part of this collaboration, the smartphone is expected to support ARRI’s Color Science, Log-C3 Recording, and other professional video technologies. These features will allow videos recorded on the phone to be produced with more natural colors, improved dynamic range, and professional quality.
Honor has also announced its first in-house imaging chip, the Yuguang H1. The company claims this chip will make photo and video processing faster and more efficient. This chip will provide capabilities such as improved image quality in low light, reduced noise in videos, and AI-based image processing, which could enhance camera performance beyond what was previously possible.
Other possible specifications include a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, a battery of approximately 6000mAh capacity, 120W fast charging, a 6.4-inch OLED display, and MagicOS based on Android 16. However, these specifications will only be officially confirmed at the launch event. Currently, the company has not announced a launch date for this smartphone in India. If the robotic camera technology meets user expectations, other smartphone manufacturers may also move towards adopting similar camera systems in the future.
