Option for Hormuz Strait ready, will Iran’s blockade fail? Gulf countries started mega plan worth billions of dollars
Gulf Countries Energy Security Alternative Route: Gulf countries have started taking major steps towards reducing dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, the most important sea route for oil and gas supply. Following the Iran war and regional tensions, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq, Oman and Kuwait are investing billions of dollars in alternative pipelines, rail corridors and energy storage facilities. The objective is that even in case of crisis the energy supply is not interrupted.
UAE’s West-to-East Pipeline Project
The UAE has accelerated the new West-to-East pipeline project from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah Port. Fujairah is located outside the Strait of Hormuz, which will provide an alternative route for oil exports. Upon completion of this project, UAE’s oil export capacity can almost double by 2027. Besides, plans are also being made to transport products like petrol, diesel and jet fuel.
Brainstorming on Kuwait-Saudi-UAE corridor
Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and UAE are also considering a joint pipeline network. According to the proposal, Kuwait’s oil will be transported through pipeline to the ports of Saudi Arabia or UAE, from where it can be sent to global markets. However, the final route of this ambitious project has not been decided yet.
Iraq is looking for new export routes
Iraq is also busy developing alternative routes for its oil exports. The capacity of the proposed pipeline from Basra to Jordan’s Aqaba port will be about 1 million barrels per day. At the same time, another route from Basra to Duqm port of Oman is also being considered. Apart from this, work is also being done on the modernization of the Kirkuk-Jehan pipeline, which will make access to the Mediterranean Sea easier.
Oman will become a new energy hub
Talks are ongoing between Oman and Kuwait on a large oil storage project outside Hormuz. Oman wants to develop its major ports as storage and export centers for oil and gas. This will give the Gulf countries the option of additional security and supplies in times of crisis.
Gas supply and future plans
Along with oil, new options are also being considered for natural gas. The discussion among the Gulf countries to take forward the long proposed Gulf Railway Project has intensified. At the same time, proposals to build a gas corridor from Qatar to Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and Turkey are also under discussion.
Apart from this, Saudi Arabia is considering increasing its existing East-West pipeline capacity. Experts believe that many new pipeline and rail corridor projects may emerge in the Gulf region in the coming years, which will make the global energy supply more secure and flexible.
