Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is globally renowned as Mr. Perfectionist, an actor celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail, punctuality, and unwavering dedication to cinema. However, even the biggest stars are not immune to a good old-fashioned reprimand from an angry director. During a star-studded celebration marking the 25th anniversary of the cult classic Dil Chahta HaiAamir Khan regaled fellow artists and fans with a hilarious and unforgettable behind-the-scenes anecdote. The actor candidly shared how a single night of prioritizing cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell party over a night shoot resulted in him getting relentlessly scolded by filmmaker Reema Kagti for a staggering four to five hours.
A Star-Studded Reunion and Memories of 'Dil Chahta Hai'
The nostalgic revelation came to light during a special anniversary event celebrating 25 years of Dil Chahta Haithe iconic coming-of-age film directed by Farhan Akhtar. The grand gathering brought together the film’s stellar core team, including Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Sonali Kulkarni, Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, legendary lyricist Javed Akhtar, and the musical trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, alongside special guests like Zoya Akhtar.
While reminiscing about their cinematic journeys, the conversation drifted away from Dil Chahta Hai toward other memorable milestones in their careers. It was during this lively interaction with Zoya Akhtar that Aamir Khan decided to share a hilarious throwback story involving Reema Kagti—who had served as an assistant director on Dil Chahta Hai before directing Aamir herself years later in the psychological thriller Talaash (2012).
The Sachin Tendulkar Farewell Party That Cost Aamir His Punctuality
Setting the stage for the incident, Aamir explained that the confrontation took place during the night shoots of Talaash. Being a close friend and an ardent admirer of cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, Aamir found himself caught between his professional commitments and a monumental personal event.
Recalling the night, Aamir shared, “I am a big fan of Sachin Tendulkar. He was being given a farewell. Sachin and I are very good friends. He told me that this is my farewell party, so please do come. I told him that I will definitely come. That night we were shooting for Talaash. It was a night shoot.”
Knowing how strict directors can be, Aamir approached Reema Kagti beforehand to seek permission. He reasoned with her, explaining the cultural and personal significance of the occasion. Although Reema was visibly unhappy from within, she grudgingly gave him a one-hour grace period, saying, “Okay, come an hour late.”
“How Dare You Come Late?”: Reema Kagti’s Epic Scolding Session
The real trouble began when Aamir’s delay exceeded the agreed-upon one-hour window because Sachin Tendulkar specifically requested him to wait for a particular moment at the party. Fully aware that he was inviting wrath, Aamir arrived on set expecting a standard scolding, but what followed far exceeded his worst nightmares.
Recalling the marathon dressing-down, Aamir chuckled, “She scolded me for about 4-5 hours.” Reema Kagti unleashed her full fury on the superstar, demanding to know, “How dare you come late? Is this your professional attitude?” The verbal lashing was so intense and memorable that veteran actress Shabana Azmi, who was also present during the recount, still playfully teases Aamir about the incident to this day. Concluding the hilarious anecdote with a smile, Aamir remarked that to this very day, he still tries his best to keep Reema Kagti’s famous temper under check.
