How often should you really clean your piercings?

You've got the ear stack, the tiny nose stud, maybe a cartilage hoop you're very proud of. But when did you last clean any of it?

Piercing hygiene is one of those things everyone assumes they're doing right until a sore, crusty earlobe says otherwise.

Regular cleaning helps you avoid infections, piercing bumps and other common complications. Even after healing, neglecting cleaning can still lead to irritation or infection. Sweat, product and everyday grime collect around the jewellery. A gentle, regular clean keeps the area comfortable and your jewelery looking its best.

Fresh piercing: twice a day is the sweet spot

A brand-new piercing is basically a small wound, so it needs a routine. Piercing studios recommend cleaning twice daily for the entire healing period, and some sources stretch that to two to three times a day using a piercing aftercare saline solution. A simple rhythm is once in the morning and once before bed.

Healing takes longer than most people expect. Depending on the placement, it can take anywhere from four weeks to a year. Lobes tend to settle quickly, while cartilage or navel piercings can take up to a year or more to fully mature. Don't stop your routine just because it looks fine. Wait until your piercer says it's healed.

Scrubbing more doesn't mean healing faster. Cleaning too often can strip the skin's natural oils and lead to dryness and irritation.

Piercers also warn that using harsh products, or lots of different ones, can irritate the area. Your body does most of the healing. Your job is to keep the spot clean and dry, then leave it alone.

What to use (and skip)

Sterile saline or clean running water is all you need. Skip alcohol, peroxide, tea tree oil and antibacterial soaps, which can delay healing. Use saline made for wound care, not contact lens solution.

The steps are simple:

  • Wash your hands first.
  • Spray saline on clean gauze or a paper towel, or rinse under the shower.
  • Gently wipe the front and back of the piercing.
  • Pat dry with a fresh paper towel.

Don't twist or spin your jewellery. It can cause irritation bumps and scarring. Those little “crusties” are normal, so don't pick at them.

Healed piercings: a weekly reset

Experts suggest cleaning healed piercings once a week or every two weeks, depending on buildup or irritation. Think of it as a mini reset. Wash the area gently with mild, fragrance-free soap while you shower, rinse well and dry.

Your jewelery deserves the same attention. Regularly worn earrings benefit from a weekly clean, and a wipe before and after occasional wear. Because posts and backs sit against your skin for hours, sweat and product buildup collect there.

When to clean more

Some situations call for an extra rinse. After heavy sweating or if the piercing gets dirty, an additional saline rinse helps. Climate matters too. If you live somewhere hot and sticky, you may need to clean more often. That's worth remembering if you're in a humid city.

Oral piercings are their own category

For lip and similar piercings, rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash two to three times a day alongside your usual outer care.

Some surface piercings, like surface anchors, need saline soaks at least weekly for life, because gunk can build up under the top.

Red flags

Mild redness and tenderness early on are normal. Persistent swelling, heat, thick or foul-smelling discharge, or pain that gets worse instead of better isn't. Don't remove the jewelery yourself, since that can trap an infection. See your piercer or a doctor.
