How OTT transformed acting careers, giving film stars and newcomers a new identity

The rise of OTT platforms has transformed Bollywood, giving actors opportunities to build recognition beyond theatrical releases.

While film stardom was once largely associated with box-office success, a compelling performance in a web series can now create a loyal fan base and give performers a career-defining breakthrough.

Established Bollywood stars embrace OTT

Several mainstream actors have successfully explored the digital space. Saif Ali Khan made a strong impression with Sacred Games, where his portrayal of police officer Sartaj Singh introduced him to a new generation of viewers.

Ajay Devgn made his web series debut with Rudra: The Edge of Darkness, while Madhuri Dixit explored a different role in The Fame Game. Abhishek Bachchan also headlined Breathe: Into the Shadows, showcasing his versatility.

Character actors emerge as streaming favourites

Character actors have arguably benefited the most from the OTT boom. Pankaj Tripathi became a household name with his portrayal of Kaleen Bhaiya in Mirzapur, while Jaideep Ahlawat earned widespread appreciation for Paatal Lok. Manoj Bajpayee also built a successful streaming franchise with The Family Man.

These performances demonstrated that audiences are increasingly drawn to complex, unconventional characters rather than conventional heroes.

Newcomers find recognition without box-office hits

OTT has also opened doors for emerging performers. Aaditi Pohankar gained recognition through Aashram, while shows such as Kota Factory and Mismatched introduced younger actors to wider audiences.

Although theatrical cinema continues to offer unmatched scale and commercial visibility, streaming provides greater room for character development and experimentation. Ultimately, there is no single winner in the OTT game.

The real advantage belongs to actors who find memorable roles, regardless of the platform.
