Humidity in the air increases significantly during the rainy season. This can cause caterpillars, weevils, or small insects to infest the wheat and rice stored in the kitchen. Sometimes, there’s a fear of mold or a foul odor in the grains. This is a very common problem that worries almost everyone. If you want to protect your food from insects during the rainy season , you can try these simple and effective home remedies.
1. Dry Neem Leaves: Neem is considered a natural insecticide. Dry fresh neem leaves thoroughly in the sun or air. Then, tie them into small cotton bags and place them in small containers of wheat or rice. Their pungent smell keeps insects away.
2. Dried Red Chillies and Bay Leaves:
The pungent smell of bay leaves and dried red chilies deters insects from approaching your grains. Simply add 5-6 dried red chilies and a few bay leaves to a container of rice or wheat. Using this method can help preserve your grains for several months.
3. Whole Cloves:
The strong scent of cloves is very effective in repelling weevils and insects. For this, take 10-12 whole cloves and bury them between the grains. If the drum is large, you can increase the amount of cloves.
4. Clove oil or mustard oil:
Mustard oil is an age-old and proven recipe for long-term storage of wheat. Mix a little mustard oil with wheat, rub it well, then dry it and store it. For rice, you can apply a few drops of clove oil to a bottle of cotton wool and store it in a container.
5. Loop Salt:
Moisture is the most likely cause of grain spoilage. In such a situation, you can use salt to reduce moisture. To do this, place a few small pieces of loose salt wrapped in a cotton cloth in the container containing wheat or rice. This will absorb any excess moisture from the grain.
