Monsoon activity has intensified dramatically across India, triggering severe weather conditions in multiple states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) released its National Weather Bulletin for today, July 25, issuing a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall across three key regions: East Rajasthan, Gujarat State, and Central Maharashtra (including its Ghat areas).
Residents in low-lying, coastal, and plain areas of Gujarat and East Rajasthan face potential severe waterlogging and localised flooding. The weather office has advised extreme caution for travellers and locals in these affected zones.
Orange & Yellow Alerts: Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall Breakdown
Apart from the red-alert zones, torrential downpours and stormy conditions are predicted across 18 states and Union Territories in Northern, Western, Eastern, and North-Eastern India:
Very Heavy Rainfall Alert: Coastal Maharashtra (Konkan), Goa, Odisha, and West Rajasthan are set to experience continuous heavy to very heavy precipitation.
Hilly & Northern Belt: Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh are on alert for potential landslides and sudden flash floods.
Central & Eastern India: Steady moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal.
North-East India: Widespread torrential rains are forecasted for Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Southern Coastal Belt: Coastal Karnataka will continue to see strong monsoon spells.
IMD Advisory: Thunderstorms, Lightning, and High Wind Speeds
The IMD has accompanied its rain alerts with severe thunderstorm and lightning warnings:
Gusty Winds (40–50 km/h): Forecasted over Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Moderate Gusts (30–40 km/h) & Lightning: Expected in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Bihar, Coastal Karnataka, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Telangana.
Lightning Risk: Active across Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Central Maharashtra, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and Vidarbha. Strong surface winds will also prevail along coastal Andhra Pradesh.
