Immortal song born from pain: Shailendra’s incomplete story hidden behind ‘Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan’

New Delhi . In the golden era of Hindi cinema, many such songs have been composed which not only provide entertainment but also touch the depth of human emotions. One such song is Jeena Yahaan Marna Yahaan which is a part of Mera Naam Joker. This song still resides in people’s hearts and brings tears to the eyes every time it is heard. But the story behind this song is as emotional as it is painful.

This immortal song was sung by Mukesh and its composer was Shankar Jaikishan. But the soul of this song was its lyricist Shailendra who wrote it during the most difficult period of his life. It is said that this song is a mirror of his personal pain and struggle.

Actually, Shailendra had made a film Teesri Kasam in his career for which he had high expectations. But the film failed at the box office and he suffered huge financial losses. This failure broke him to the core. The debt burden increased and mental stress surrounded him. During this period, his close friend Raj Kapoor requested him to write songs for his film.

When Shailendra came to meet Raj Kapoor, he looked very calm and broken. Raj Kapoor shared the story and emotions of the film. At the same time Shailendra wrote the initial lines of the song on paper. These were the same lines which later became history. But fate had something else in store. Even before the song was completed, Shailendra’s health deteriorated and he died. His demise left not only the film industry but also Raj Kapoor in deep shock.

Raj Kapoor did not want to leave this song incomplete. In such a situation, he handed over this responsibility to Shailendra’s son Shaili Shailendra. The son completed the father’s incomplete words and took the song to a new level. It was not just a song but became a symbol of the emotional bond between father and son.

  • The film itself was a story of struggle. Raj Kapoor invested his entire capital in making it and even mortgaged his house. The film took about six years to be made but after its release it was not as successful at the box office as expected. However, with time the film and its music became classics.

Today ‘Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan’ has become not just a song but a story of truth and struggle of life. It reminds us that sometimes the most beautiful art is born from the deepest pain.
