What did the research reveal? No significant impact on engines
The government stated that the impact of E20 petrol was studied jointly by Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). This study examined both two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles. The study found that using E20 petrol does not require any technical modifications to the engine. This means that most older vehicles can run normally on this fuel without any engine modifications.
What did the government say about performance and mileage?
The government stated that during testing, E20 petrol did not have any significant impact on the performance, starting ability, driving experience, or metal and plastic parts of older vehicles. Furthermore, no signs of excessive engine wear were found. This clearly indicates that in most cases, E20 petrol has not had any significant impact on the vehicle’s normal operation.
The government also clarified its position on fuel mileage. It stated that vehicle mileage isn’t solely determined by fuel. Many factors, including road conditions, traffic, driving style, timely servicing, and engine condition, affect fuel consumption. Therefore, it’s inaccurate to attribute low fuel consumption solely to E20 petrol.
What should older vehicle owners do?
If you own a BS-3 vehicle and use E20 petrol, ensure regular servicing and check rubber parts and gaskets. Experts believe that even older vehicles can run safely on E20 fuel with regular maintenance.
